Always research the location you’re going to and be thorough. Look into the country, city, resort, etc. Know the areas that you should avoid and the different cultural, ethnic and legal regulations. You’ll also be able to find out the precautions that you’ll need to take.

Get a good map of where you’re going and study it before you leave. Clearly mark off important places of importance like your hotel, the airport, the embassy and other points of interest so you can easily navigate through the city. Take group tours or planned activities instead of venturing out on your own. You’ll still get to see everything that you wanted to but you’ll be guided by someone who knows the area. This will prevent you from becoming lost or from becoming a target for crime.
